The role of the Convention Chair is one of the more high profile positions within ACPA. Generally appointed no later than 18 months from the convention date, the Convention Chair will work directly with the ACPA leadership and the ACPA International Office to implement a meaningful and educational convention, appoint a team of practitioners, faculty. and graduate students that can fulfill the responsibilities required of a convention planning team, solve the regular challenges associated with planning a large event dependent upon support of volunteers, and maintain an accurate account of expenditures and schedule.
Additionally, the Convention Chair sets the tone for committee meetings, oversees the logistics of the committee's operation, assigns tasks to members, sets the agenda and presides over meetings. The Convention Chair primarily works with the ACPA President (for that convention) and the ACPA International Office.
The Convention Chair, as defined by ACPA bylaws, is selected by the "Convention Chair Selection Committee," which is chaired by the ACPA Vice President and Associate Executive Director. Committee members include the Director of Professional Development, the Director of Equity and Inclusion, and the Executive Director (ex officio, non-voting).
Qualifications
Convention Chairs should be able to effectively demonstrate a commitment to ACPA through past volunteer and leadership service to the association, have outstanding organizational and communication skills, possess a willingness to work with a team of volunteers, and understand the ACPA culture. Although prior membership on a convention committee is not required, the ideal applicant should have previously served in a leadership role on a convention planning team. The Convention Chair must be a member (cannot hold an associate membership) of ACPA.
