This UofL center is heading up the state’s efforts to develop clean, affordable energy sources and help lead the nation to energy independence. Researchers there are focusing on wind, solar, geothermal and biomass resources; energy storage; and the logistics and distribution challenges for new energy sources.

Cardinal Covenant

Cardinal Covenant

In 2007, UofL initiated Cardinal Covenant in response to college costs and the challenge for students from low-income families to fund their education. The program provides full scholarships to Kentucky’s most economically disadvantaged students—those whose families live at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty line. For a family of four, this equals $31,800 or less per year (2008 figures).

Health Sciences Center TIF Funding

TIF funding is helping expand the university’s Health Sciences Center in downtown Louisville by supporting new labs and buildings and helping facilitate the hiring of additional UofL researchers. These actions will help the city become a major player in moving new procedures and medicines to the marketplace. The expansion is expected to create 8,700 jobs, $16 billion in total payroll and over $668 million in payroll taxes generated over 30 years. It also is expected to attract $1.2 billion in private money to Louisville over the next two decades.
