Students to examine China’s public health issues

Jinan University

Several SPHIS students will join Robert Jacobs, PhD, and Tammi Thomas, MSW, on a 10-day trip to China this May. The group will visit Jinan University in Guangzhou – the institution where Jacobs lectured while a Fulbright Scholar at Sichuan University in 2010-11.

While at Jinan University, Dr. Jacobs, a professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, met Dr. Chipeng Wu, a faculty member in the Department of Preventative Medicine. She spent a year in the United State and worked with Jacobs as SPHIS.

“Jinan has an International School with a curriculum that is primarily in English, in addition to their curriculum in Mandarin. We worked with the Dean of that school to coordinate this trip, and hope to develop a basis for future exchanges,” Jacobs said.

Both undergraduate and graduate students will be a part of this international summer program where they will examine the country’s public health challenges. The students will stay on the Jinan University campus and attend lectures on Chinese culture, history, food safety and economics. They’ll also receive the opportunity to visit the Provincial Institute of Public Health at Guangdon Provincial CDC.
