Alumna, Priska Ndege, encourages undergrads to build professional networks

For those of us interested in international opportunities, where do we start? What is a NGO? Are there global health opportunities that aren’t health promotion focused?

These were just a few of the questions undergraduate students who are new to the public health asked their guest speaker, Priska Ndege, MPH, on Wednesday, Oct. 7 on UofL’s Belknap Campus.

Priska completed her Master of Public Health (MPH) in 2014 with dual concentrations in health promotion and health management. She currently works as a research coordinator and analyst for Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Tanzania.

Director of Students Services, Tammi Thomas, MSW, invited Priska to speak to her Majoring in Public Health class so they could learn about her journey into the field as well as what it’s like to work in public health outside of the United States.

Another important message Priska shared was about the importance of building a professional network. “You have to do the work,” Priska explained. She encouraged them to “volunteer, talk to professors, Google, and network in order to discover the amazing opportunities global health has to offer.”

Priska knows from experience the value of getting involved. Her journey into public health started when she was a freshman at UK and reached out to Dr. Richard Wilson at SPHIS, which lead to volunteering with the Louisville Metro Center for Heath Equity, and eventually enrolling in the MPH program.

We are grateful that Priska reached out to SPHIS and offered to come back and share her experiences with current public health students. She also will be attending the upcoming Network Night Out sponsored by SPHIS student organizations on Oct 15.

We are always looking for ways to connect our alumni with current students. If you are interested in speaking, please contact Melissa Schreck, Director, External Affairs.
