Jackie Singleton successfully defended her PhD dissertation, “Tobacco Dependence Treatment Education for Dental Students Using Standardized Patients” on Oct. 22. Dr. Singleton had been a doctoral student in the Department of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Richard Wilson chairs Ms. Singleton’s committee; other members include Drs. John Myers, Ruth Carrico, and David Scott (School of Dentistry).  

Natasha DeJarnett, MPH, PhD Candidate, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, discussed “Traditional cardiovascular disease risk factors predict acrolein metabolite level in a population-based study” as an oral presentation at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting on Oct. 29. Ms. DeJarnett also was selected to receive a Minority Travel Grant to attend the AHA Scientifc Sessions on behalf of the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences. This award specifically recognizes minority investigators early in their careers, encourages participation in the Scientific Sessions, and provides a stipend to help defer travel expenses to attend Scientific Sessions.
