Jackie Singleton successfully defended her PhD dissertation, “Tobacco Dependence Treatment Education for Dental Students Using Standardized Patients” on Oct. 22. Dr. Singleton had been a doctoral student in the Department of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Richard Wilson chairs Ms. Singleton’s committee; other members include Drs. John Myers, Ruth Carrico, and David Scott (School of Dentistry).  

Natasha DeJarnett, MPH, PhD Candidate, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, discussed “Traditional cardiovascular disease risk factors predict acrolein metabolite level in a population-based study” as an oral presentation at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting on Oct. 29. Co-authors include Daniel Conklin, John Myers, Ihab Hamzeh, Stephen Wagner, Atul Chugh, Matthew Zahn, David J. Tollerud, Deirdre Higdon, Carrie Becher, Bradley Wyatt, Tiffany Ciszewski, Daniel Riggs, Sumanth Prabhu, and Aruni Bhatnagar. View the abstract.

Natasha DeJarnett, MPH, PhD Candidate, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, will present “Decreased Levels of Circulating ‘Early’ Vascular Progenitor Cells are Associated with Cardiovascular Disease Risk” at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2012 in Los Angeles on Nov. 6. Co-authors include Daniel Conklin, John Myers, Ihab Hamzeh, Stephen Wagner, Timothy O'Toole, Atul Chugh, Matthew Zahn, David Tollerud, Andrew DeFilippis, Deirdre Higdon, Carrie Becher, Bradley Wyatt, Tiffany Ciszewski, Daniel Riggs, James McCracken, Wesley Abplanalp, Sumanth Prabhu, and Aruni Bhatnagar. Ms. DeJarnett also was selected to receive a Minority Travel Grant to attend the AHA Scientifc Sessions on behalf of the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences. This award specifically recognizes minority investigators early in their careers, encourages participation in the Scientific Sessions, and provides a stipend to help defer travel expenses to attend Scientific Sessions.
