SPHIS students generate interest in public health careers.
At the end of the fall semester, the Kentucky Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) invited SPHIS to participate in a series of middle school health career fairs at Thomas Jefferson, Lassiter and Iroquois middle schools.
A group of SPHIS students responded to our call for volunteers to develop and facilitate these brief, interactive presentations. Since it’s not an easy task to engage middle school students, the group decided to use images and props in order to provide concrete examples of how public health is a part of students’ every day lives. After showing seat belts, bike helmets and anti-smoking posters, they explained the range of positions available in public health. As a result, students were able to connect their interests and skills with an area of public health.
Many thanks to the four motivated and enthusiastic MPH students who facilitated these activities – Christina Burton, Kim Clark, Kim Deavers and Maisah Edwards.
