SPHIS student, Matt Groenewold, selected as a CDC Epidemiologic Intelligence Service Officer

Congratulations to SPHIS student, Matt Groenewold, who was recently offered a position in the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) program beginning July 2008. This highly competitive and prestigious program produces alumni who are some of the nation's premier medical and public health leaders. In April 2008, the incoming EIS class will go to Atlanta to participate in the annual EIS conference and assignment activities.

“This is quite an achievement for Matt and I hope it paves the way for many other UofL SPHIS students,” says Dr. Susan Muldoon, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, SPHIS.

Mr. Groenewold will enter the program as an officer in the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Public Health Sciences with a concentration in Epidemiology and expects to graduate in May 2008.

About EIS
Headquartered at the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) is a unique two-year, post-graduate program of service and
on-the-job training for health professionals interested in the practice of epidemiology. Since 1951, over 2,700 EIS Officers have responded to requests for epidemiologic assistance within the United States and throughout the world.

Every year, CDC's EIS Program selects 70-80 persons from among the nation's top health professionals to enter the EIS and pursue on-the-job training in applied epidemiologic skills that are vital to the maintenance of public health. EIS Officers continue to play a major role in the implementation of CDC's mission of preventing disease and injury and promoting healthy lifestyles.
