National Public Health Week - April 7 - 13

The University of Louisville School of Public Health and Information Sciences will observe National Public Health Week April 7-13, 2008 with several events exploring the effect of global climate change on the public’s health.  Students, faculty, staff and community members are all invited to participate.

Community Events for National Public Health Week

  • SPHIS students, faculty and staff will be going out into the community to promote the importance of public health, encourage healthy habits and bring attention to the effects of climate change.  Read more. . .

2008 Middle School Essay Contest
Monday, April 7

  • Winners Image Link2008 National Public Health Week Essay Contest Winners

  • We invite students in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades to participate in the contest by writing a short essay describing how public health has impacted their life by answering the following question: “What would my life be like without clean running water?” Essays should be no more than 400 words. Deadline to submit an essay is April 1, 2008. Contest winners will be announced on the school’s website on April 7.  Read more. . .

Milestones in Public Health Exhibit
Tuesday, April 8 through Friday, April 11

    • The exhibit, based on the Pfizer publication “Milestones in Public Health,” highlights the 11 public health milestones focused on in the book. Topics include vaccines, environmental health, infectious disease control, advances in maternal and child health, U.S. Public Health Infrastructure, cardiovascular disease and food safety. The exhibit will be on display in the School of Public Health and Information Sciences, 4th floor, K-building, Health Sciences Center.

A Roundtable Discussion
Wednesday, April 9
1:00 – 3:00 pm, Auditorium - Kornhauser Health Sciences Library.

    • The goal of this activity is to bring together experts in environmental and health sciences to examine the connection between climate change and the health of our nation today and raise awareness of the very real consequences of climate change on the health of our communities, our families and our children.   • Paul Ewald, PhD, Professor, Department of Biology, University of Louisville will present "Emerging Diseases: How to Distinguish the Few Grave Threats from the Many Fizzlers." Dr. Ewald’s research concerns the evolution of virulence and antibiotic resistance among infectious diseases and integrated approaches to understanding the causes and development of chronic disease.  Most recently, his laboratory research has been focusing on the evolution of virulence and antibiotic resistance in the agent of cholera, Vibrio cholerae.
