National Public Health Week: April 6 - 12, 2009
The NPHW 2009 theme is “Building the Foundation for a Healthy America.” Our goal is to raise awareness nationally and locally of public health’s critical role in ensuring a healthy America. We’re hoping that all SPHIS students, faculty and staff will get involved.

Monday, April 6 - Luncheon at LMPHW
The Student Government Association (SGA) at the UofL School of Public Health & Information Sciences (SPHIS) is hosting a lunch for Louisville Metro Department for Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) employees. The event is scheduled Monday, April 6 from 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM at the LMPHW. SPHIS students want to thank LMPHW employees for their hard work and meet professionals working in the field of public health. Employees have been asked to bring business cards for a raffle.

Tuesday, April 7 - SPHIS Barbeque and Booth
The SGA is hosting a barbeque on Tuesday, April 7 from 11:30 AM - 1 PM on the HSC Quad.
Come by for lunch and visit the “This is Public Health!” booth to raise awareness of the public health’s role in keeping American healthy. Don’t miss the games and prizes! Suggested donation for lunch is $2.
Wednesday, April 8 - National Start Walking Day
Take a stand against heart disease by participating in the American Heart Association’s National “Start Walking” Day on April 8. Locally, the AHA is hosting an all-day event at 4th Street Live with people walking on treadmills continuously. Representatives from the SPHIS SGA will be attending from 9 - 10:30 AM, taking turns walking alongside Mayor Abramson, Dr. Troutman, and other community members. Please email sphsga@louisville.edu if you want to walk for a 15 minute shift.
Walk the Talk Contest: April 7 - 14
Think you can “Walk the Talk”? SGA will be passing out pedometers to all SPHIS faculty staff, and students to promote exercise as part of National Public Health Week. The contest will run from April 7 - April 14 to see who can rack up the most miles.
Pick up a pedometer during today's cookout at the "This is Public Health" Booth on April 7. If you can't stop by the booth, then pick it up from Lynne Dosker (reception) or Dimple Patel.
Students - Turn in your steps to Dimple Patel in the K-wing, 2nd floor at noon on April 14.
Faculty and Staff - Turn in your steps to Lynn Dosker, receptionist by noon on April 14.
Winners will be announced on Wednesday, April 15.

First place - Ray Yeager with 73,538 steps
Second place - Marilyn Brown-Anderson with 60,728 steps
Faculty/staff competition
First place - Shelia Anderson with 19,193 steps
Second place - John Myers with 8,000 steps
Winners can stop by the reception desk to collect their prizes between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
Thursday, April 9 - Effective Communication Workshop
On Thursday, April 9, KPHA is hosting the workshop, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, here at SPHIS. Presented by William Blackford, the event will be held from 12 - 1 PM in conference room 103.
