Dr. Somnath Datta receives funding from the NIH

Somnath Datta, PhD, Professor, Department of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics, will serve as the PI on the two-year project, "Novel Statistical Models For Dental Caries," which begins in July and is funded by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Datta will undertake a detailed statistical examination of caries data obtained from the Iowa Fluoride Study. In this process, novel statistical models will be developed for univariate and bivariate count data both longitudinally, as well as, cross-sectionally and marginally, both at person level and tooth level.  Dr. Steven Levy, DDS, Wright-Bush-Shreves Endowed Professor of Research of the University of Iowa is a co-investigator on this study. It is anticipated that through innovative and efficient statistical modeling, it will be possible to mine the data more fully and discover novel relationships between caries incidences/severity and various potential risk factors.
