Department of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics doctoral candidate, Mr. Sutirtha Chakraborty, published a paper titled "Surrogate Variable Analysis Using Partial Least Squares (SVA-PLS) in Gene Expression Studies" in the journal Bioinformatics, first published online January 11, 2012. This paper, co-authored by his doctoral mentors Drs. Somnath and Susmita Datta, show that one can substantially improve the power of gene detection by incorporating surrogate variables into the underlying statistical models.
