Back to School Block Party - Thursday, August 27

Welcome back to campus! As the new school term begins, we want to encourage you to come out and visit the Gray Street Farmers' Market this Thursday, August 27 for our "Campus Block Party."  Festivities will last from 10:30 AM to 2 PM on the 400 block of E. Gray Street, between S. Preston and S. Jackson streets, within walking distance of all schools on the HSC. So enjoy a break from your busy school schedule and take advantage of these unique campus activities:

- - 20 vendors selling an amazing variety of fruits, vegetables, baked goods, granola, cheese, salsa, jams, honey, syrup, meat, eggs, herbs, crafts and flowers. Don’t miss out on enjoying the last of the summer peaches, tomatoes and corn!

- - Live music by old time string band, The Jawbones ( http://thejawbones.com/ ) starting at 11 AM.

- - Chef Jim Whaley will demonstrate how to cook a meal that is perfect for individuals who are on the go but still want to eat healthy. Ingredients from the farmers' market will be used to prepare a pork and fresh veggie stir fry, grilled peaches with maple syrup, and perfect corn on the cob. Demonstration starts at 11:30 AM.

- - Along with free food samples, there will be vendors selling lunch items, including grilled to order burgers and brats.

- - Health professionals will be passing out education materials and volunteers from the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service will be available to answer your questions.

The Gray Street Farmers' Market is open every Thursday from 10:30 AM to 2 PM on the 400 block of E. Gray Street through the end of October. The School of Public Health and Information Sciences worked with community partners to establish this farmers’ market in the downtown area to increase access to fresh, locally grown food in the east downtown area.
