About

Suraj M. Alexander earned his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Madras, India. He received his masters and doctoral degrees in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). He is a Licensed Professional Engineer and a Certified Quality Engineer. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and the American Society of Quality. Dr. Alexander joined the J.B. Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville in 1976. Prior to that Dr. Alexander was on the faculty of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Virginia Tech. He has also been employed as a Design Engineer at Corning, Inc.

Academic Experience

Dr. Alexander is a professor and one of the founding members of the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Louisville. He served the department as chairman for ten years (1995-2005) . He has received the dean’s award for distinguished service, and the dean’s award for outstanding research. His teaching and research are in the areas of quality assurance, process quality monitoring, diagnosis and control, sustainable systems design, production systems design, risk management, and decision support systems. He received the award of excellence for contributions and outstanding achievements in the areas of Quality and Reliability Engineering from the Institute of Industrial Engineers.

Research Experience

Dr. Alexander has been the PI or Co-PI on over $10 million of funded research from organizations, such as, the National Science Foundation, DHS, GE, Navy, IBM, Kentucky Science and Engineering Foundation, Jeff Boat, Brown Forman, Henry Vogt, UKCRMS, and others. He has authored and coauthored over 200 publications in refereed journals, and proceedings. He has mentored over 150 PhD, M.Eng, and MSIE students.

Service Experience

Dr. Alexander currently serves as the Acting Chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering, and as the Interim Director of the Logistics and Distribution Institute at the University of Louisville. He has served on the editorial board of the journal “Quality Engineering”, and the advisory board of the Logistics and Distributions Institute. His past leadership positions include President of the Louisville Chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, President of the Council of Fellows, Director of the Design Interest Group, Director of the Quality Control and Reliability Engineering Division of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, and Education Chairman of the Louisville Chapter of the American Society for Quality. He was also on the Board of Directors of the Advanced Technology Council and a Leadership Louisville, Bingham Fellow.
