Be “Up to Speed”: Continuing Education for Professional Engineers
June 10, 2011, Noon to 1 p.m.
The Speed Alumni Council in collaboration with the J.B. Speed School of
Engineering and the UofL Alumni Association presents the first of a
series of continuing education workshops that will enable Professional
Engineers to obtain required professional development hours. In the
future we will offer courses on Environmental and Legal topics
June 10, 2011, 12 p.m. - Dr. Joseph Hagerty
Ethics in Engineering - 1 HR PDH workshop that meets Indiana & Kentucky standards
Dr. Hagerty, recently retired J.B. Speed Engineering School professor,
taught at Speed since 1970. He graduated with a M. Eng. CE from Speed
and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He is a Professional
Engineer and has served as a consultant for a wide range of firms and
has been an invited lecturer at a number of universities. Among the
courses he taught at Speed was Ethics. This course will offer an
introduction on how to analyze ethical problems. Statutes governing the
practice of engineering and Codes of Ethics will be reviewed. The Code
of Ethics provides guidance for practitioners, but the code has only
general rules and guidelines. Analysis of a real problem depends on
many other factors not included in the code and the code provisions are
subject to interpretation. A method to use in analyzing ethical
problems will be presented. Then, a series of simple dilemmas will be
posed and the participants will discuss the situations in small groups,
evaluate alternatives, and choose the best alternative. These “best
choices” then will be shared and discussed with the class at large.
Admission $30 (includes lunch). Reserve space at least 1 week prior. Space is limited, so register now.
