Emeritus Faculty Rank
The Mechanical Engineering Department may recommend that emeritus faculty rank be granted to retired full-time faculty in recognition of their professional achievements. Election to emeritus rank is not automatic. To be eligible, a retiring faculty member must meet the following requirements:
Minimum of fifteen years service in a fulltime permanent faculty position in the department.
Rank of associate professor of mechanical engineering or professor of
mechanical engineering at the time of retirement.
A priori agreement in writing to be considered for emeritus status.
Career contributions to the Mechanical Engineering Department, the J.B.
Speed School of Engineering, the mechanical engineering profession, and/or the
University of Louisville that are deemed meritorious through a majority vote to
that effect by the department faculty.
Emeritus rank is permanent. Emeritus faculty are encouraged to maintain an active presence in the department and engage in activities are found to be satisfying and mutually beneficial, but such interactions are not mandated. Faculty granted emeritus status shall hold the title of professor emeritus of mechanical engineering or associate professor emeritus of mechanical engineering, depending upon their rank at retirement.
