Graduate Degrees in Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering offers three degrees beyond the B.S. degree. These are:

  • M.Eng. Degree - This is our accredited masters of engineering degree program. This is principally extended to our best undergraduates, to obtain a masters degree in their fifth year (B.S. + 1 year). This consists of coursework plus a structured research component; there is no formal masters thesis.
  • M.S. Degree – This is the traditional masters of science degree. This consists of coursework plus a masters level research project that forms the basis of the thesis.
  • Ph.D. Degree – This is the highest degree available and consists of coursework beyond the M.S. level and a substantive body of new and unique research, which constitutes the Ph.D. thesis.

Master’s degree partnership between GE Appliances, a Haier Company and University of Louisville for the Edison Engineering Development Program (EEDP)

The Edison Engineering Development Program is a two to three year technical training program within GE Appliances, a Haier Company designed to accelerate the technical learning of new-hire design engineers with degrees in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or computer engineering/computer science. As a part of this program, the EEDP engineers complete a Master’s Degree in mechanical or electrical engineering through a partnership with University of Louisville. To be eligible for the program, engineers must be hired by GE Appliances, a Haier Company following a detailed interview process.

The EEDP was initiated at GE in 1923 and adopted by GE Appliances in 1975. The Master’s degree partnership with University of Louisville began in 2012. The EEDP program and UofL partnership have continued following the transition to GE Appliances, a Haier Company in June of 2016. One key feature of the partnership is the offering of University of Louisville graduate level ME and ECE classes at Louisville’s Appliance Park, the home of GE Appliances, a Haier Company. EEDP engineers are also provided the opportunity to complete research projects under the guidance of University of Louisville faculty.
