Humanities/Social Sciences Elective Requirements
Mechanical engineering students must complete 18
hours1 of humanities/social sciences
elective credit as part of the B.Sc./M.Eng. degree program. This course
work is distributed as follows (see Approved Course
List).
Nine hours2 in the arts and humanities area:
- Arts (3 hours)
- Humanities (3 hours)
- Arts or humanities
Twelve hours3 in the social and cultural studies
area (six of these hours must be at the 300-level):
- Social or behavioral science (3 hours)
- Historical studies (3 hours)
- Cross-cultural studies (3 hours)
- A fourth course in any of the three areas listed above (3
hours)
Notes
- In order to fulfill these requirements with the minimum 18
hours, three or more hours must be double counting (lie within
more than one area). For example, GEOG 201 falls within both
Social/Behavioral Science and Cross-Cultural Studies.
- If a student takes six hours of a single foreign language
(at the intermediate or above level) in partial fulfillment of
the Arts and Humanities requirement, this will count for the 300-level
requirement as well.
- Two of the Social/Cultural Studies courses must be taken from
the same department, or in the same subject (such as religious
studies).
