IEs Earn 3rd Place in Solar Flight Competition
IE undergraduate students, mentored by Dr. Tim Hardin, formed a team to compete in the first annual Mickey R. Wilhelm Solar Flight Competition sponsored by the Conn Center for Renewable Energy.
Each team was alotted $400 to build a solar powered vehicle that was to fly 100 yards in the least amount of time. The primary design focus of the IE team was to accomplish the mission regardless of weather conditons using off-the-shelf components.
The final IE design consisted of a radio controlled airplane powered by batteries that were recharged from a ground based charging station that tracked the movement of the sun. The charging station utilized a commercial solar cell, hobby servo, Arduino micro processor, and a kitchen turntable.
The team's plane fulfilled the mission in the minimum amount of time, but finished in overall third place behind a custom built helium blimp fielded by the Conn Center Team.
The team members were: Evan Adams, Hannah Downs, Sandra Lamay, Jennifer Lundberg, Austin Marshall, Sumter Pittinger, and Abby Wooldridge.
