IE Student Places Third in Regional Paper Competition
IE graduate student, Russell Harpring, placed third in the IIE Great Lakes Valley Region, Technical Paper competition this past weekend. The event, which was held on February 26th, 2011 at Ohio University, attracted approximately 100 industrial engineering students from the many IIE student chapters in the region.
Russ's project involved the development of a simulation model to improve the process flow at the Family Support Division at the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) which provides benefits (KTAP – Kentucky Temporary Assistance Program) to needy families.
The competition showcased a total of nine student projects, including one from UofL IE senior, Thomas (Andy) Eastes. Andy's project was entitled "Hussey Fabricated Products, Hybrid Machine Layout: Group Technology and Process Design".
Also in attendance from UofL were, David Aizpurua and Juan Martinez. After returning, Juan commented, "I really enjoyed listening to all of the true life stories of IE professionals and how successful in life they are. IEs are everywhere! One of them helps to distribute products, another one works in a hospital, and another is a consultant. You could see from how they talked and dressed that they were people who enjoy their careers. They made me feel confident that I'm on the right track!"
Thanks guys for a great job of representing UofL IE!
