Speed School student named UofL Freshman of the Year
Kathryn “Katy” Ashby has been named UofL Outstanding Freshman of the Year by the Dean of Students.
She is currently a first-year student at the University of Louisville J.B. Speed School of Engineering and is majoring in Mechanical Engineering. As one of ten Freshman honored to be James Graham Brown Fellowship Recipients, Katy is embarking on the journey of a lifetime having already been throughout Turkey and now beginning to plan her Enrichment Projects including a trip to the Philippines. Additionally, Katy has also been awarded with the Grawemeyer Research Scholarship affording her the opportunity to do undergraduate research of her choosing. Currently, she holds a research position in the University of Louisville’s GE Rapid Prototyping Center. Her current research focus is in Advanced Process Controls for the Laser Sintering of Thermoplastics.
Since beginning as a University of Louisville Student in August, Katy has quickly become involved on campus. Katy is currently serving as the Freshmen Speed School Student Council President, Speed School Student Council Director of Society Relations and enjoys the opportunities to work with the Industrial Board of Advisors, ABET, and Alumni Relations to help get her fellow freshmen students involved. Katy has been able to share her love of the university being honored to be a speaker on the President’s Fall Outreach, a shadow host, and through presentations to the Board of Trustees and the Board of Overseers. Additionally, Katy is extremely involved in Sigma Kappa Sorority.
Prior to attending the University of Louisville, during her senior year, Katy was chosen as the pilot student for a high school Co-op with General Electric Aviation’s Madisonville Plant assisting on engineering projects, quality control, and becoming proficient at the first level in PC-DIMIS program writing. Having been raised on a farm in the one-stoplight town of Hanson, KY, Katy enjoys playing with her mules and horses, baking, and working with children. Katy graduated as valedictorian from Madisonville North Hopkins High School in Madisonville, KY in 2012.
