Challenges in Internet Identity Management
Speaker: Dr. Richard Smith
Thanks to new Internet applications, the ongoing challenge of identifying and authenticating people on the Internet has taken on new guises. The proliferation of “shopping cart” sites and of blogs that invite comments has led users to maintain dozens or even hundreds of separate passwords. Evolving protocols like SAML and OpenID try to apply existing techniques to these problems while retaining security. While these protocols hold promise, some implementations leave users open to attack. These weaknesses often arise from inadequate specification of the security problem, or from “weak links” in a distributed implementation.
Dr. Rick Smith is the author of two books on information security: Authentication (2002) and Internet Cryptography (1997). As a security professional his work has focused on high assurance network security, including network security architecture, cryptographic systems, and network guard devices. At present Dr. Smith is on the faculty at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. He holds a BS degree from Boston University, and an MS and PhD from the University of Minnesota.
The Seminar is free and open to the public. A reception and social time with the speaker starts at 3:00 pm.
