"Managing your Career after Receiving your Chemical Engineering Degree"

Dr. James G. Gerstle

Manager of Compliance & Ethics for BP America

Friday, October 17, 2008

11:00 a.m.

310 Ernst Hall

We’ll begin this seminar with the exotic tales of my career - what went right, what went wrong and the lessons I have learned. We’ll then move into leveraging your engineering skills for success and balancing those skills with integrity, leadership, and teamwork. A video clip of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster will be used to illustrate the potential pitfalls you will face and then discuss what you might have done differently.

Depending on your interests we can also discuss:

  • What the interviewer might be looking for with those "tough" questions?
  • What is meant by career planning in business?
  • Overview of BP’s business and strategies
  • BP’s Ike Hurricane Humanitarian Assistance
  • I am a "Compliance & Ethics Manager" what is that and how does it relate to engineering?

That is what I am proposing, but come prepared with a counter proposal… what would you like to discuss?

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Gerstle has over 25 years experience working for BP, Amoco, and Exxon. He has degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Tennessee (PhD) and the University of Louisville (MEng/BS). Dr. Gerstle spent the first half of his career as an advanced process control engineer and project manager at refineries, chemical, and exploration sites in North America, Europe, and Australia.

He then moved into team building and management roles. Initially his roles were in setting Amoco Refining’s advanced technology strategies and supply chain optimization. His reputation for effective team building and project delivery took him to creating and leading the SAP development team and roles in BP’s supply and trading organization. The teams he led in supply and trading were recognized globally in BP for delivering significant business improvements.

In 2004 Dr. Gerstle joined BP’s Compliance and Ethics group. First as a team leader charged with creating a team, technology strategy and delivery of global programs; and now as a manager for BP Americas to assess and assure BP’s compliance with all rules and regulations.
