The great majority of mesostructured materials known today are chalcogenides, especially oxides. Little attention has been devoted to mesostructured nitrides even though they promise a range of new properties such as increased thermal and mechanical stability, basicity, and new electronic properties. The main reason for this is the challenging synthesis of these materials. I will highlight how the technique of nanocasting can be used for the synthesis of this class of materials. Furthermore, I will illustrate how mesoporous materials and the technique of nanocasting can be utilized in high pressure chemistry for the synthesis of nanostructured high pressure phases.
