Fabio A Gonzalez is a fullbright scholar, visiting the Knowledge Discovery & Web Mining Lab to collaborate on research on stream mining algorithms
Dr. González is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Systems and Industrial Engineering, National University of Colombia. He is the co-leader of the Bioingenium research group. He earned a Computer Systems Engineer degree and a MSc in Math degree from the National University of Colombia in 1993 and 1998 respectively, and a MSc and PhD degrees in Computer Science from the University of Memphis, USA, in 2003. His research work is mainly focused on the foundations of machine learning and its applications to image processing, computer vision, data mining and information retrieval among others. He has published several research papers and has served as referee in different international journals and conferences.
Dr. González will visit from September 1, 2009 to January 31, 2010. During this time, he will work with Professor Olfa Nasraoui at the Web Mining and Knowledge Discovery Lab. The collaborative effort involves different areas of research including machine learning, information retrieval and recommender systems. Particularly, they are developing new stream-mining algorithms with a strong mathematical foundation based on robust statistics and kernel methods. Also, they are exploring the application of non-negative matrix factorization methods to the representation and retrieval of visual-textual multimodal data.
Dr. González is a Fulbright Visiting Scholar. Fulbright is the most prestigious international exchange program. It is supported by American and foreigns governments. Nominees are selected through an open, merit-based, highly competitive process.
