Research opportunities in the CECS Department


The department has faculty with international recognition and diverse credentials. Areas of current interest and expertise include data mining, web mining, knowledge discovery, multimedia, networking, intelligent systems, and bio-informatics, and information assurance.

The department has laboratories involved in research areas such as Web Mining, Data Mining, Mobile and Distributed Software Systems, Intelligent Systems, Database, and Multimedia. Faculty funding comes from diverse sources including the U.S. Army, NSF, KSEF, NASA, and several industrial partnerships. Additionally, CECS is:
a) The initiator of the new Louisville Regional Computer Forensics Lab which was recently funded
b) Recipient of two levels of NSA Information Assurance Certifications
c)  A member of the Logistics and Distribution Institute.
The department is part of the JB Speed School of Engineering. The University of Louisville has national recognition and expertise in bioterrorism, and the world's largest educational/research Human Body Simulator Lab.

CECS expertise in collaborating with industrial partners and government agencies has been successful in many projects. The Database lab has worked with the McConnell Technology and Training Center and the U.S. Navy in Developing the National Surface Treatment Center web site. A joint effort with Intellas Group CECS received NASA STTR funding and succeeded in demonstrating a proof-of-concept for an Intelligent Space Medic.
