Publishing in Engineering and Sciences: Authors, Readers, and Editors Perspectives Part II

Abstract: Publication efforts cover four areas of scholarship: Discovery, Integration, Application, and Teaching. Various publications formats are discussed in this seminar. Since different formats are designed to reach various audiences, they often undergo different review procedures, and have widely different impact. Ultimately, however, publications are judged by their relevance and citations. Relevance measures as expressed by Impact Factor and other bibliometric indicators are reviewed and compared for major journals in different subject areas. Open Access publishing paradigm is also discussed.

By comparing the perspectives of authors, readers and editors, this seminar offers guidelines for writing and publishing successful papers. To help prospective authors, search engines that retrieve bibliographical and citation data from abstracts and reference databases such as Web of Science/ISI, ResearchIndex, IEEExplore, and other, less conventional crawlers are also covered as well as ethical aspects of publishing.

Although the focus of this lecture is on publishing in engineering, researchers in other fields can benefit as well. The speaker currently chairs periodicals committees in IEEE, the professional organization that is a leader in engineering publications.

Speaker: Dr. Jacek M. Zurada, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UofL, also serves as Distinguished University Scholar. His specialty is computational learning and neural networks, including their applications to language understanding, biomedicine and signal and image processing. He has authored or co-authored over 350 papers and several books, including the pioneering text Introduction to Artificial Neural Systems that was also re-published in China, Singapore, India, Poland and Egypt.

Since 2007 Dr. Zurada has served as Chair of IEEE TAB Transactions Committee. In 2010-11 he will chair the IEEE Periodicals Committee and in 2012-13 the IEEE Periodicals Review Committee. He was President of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society and the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks. He holds the membership of the Polish Academy of Sciences and two honorary doctorates from Chinese universities. He is a Distinguished Speaker of IEEE CIS and an IEEE Fellow (http://ci.louisville.edu/zurada/).
