A Personal Perspective on Engineering

Mr. Lawrence Garth Egbert
University of Louisville
2009 Recipient of the Professional Award in Engineering
Computer Engineering and Computer Science

Abstract: My journey as a student at Speed School began in 1995 when I enrolled in the EMCS program, and ended with my graduation in 1999. Since leaving school I have had the opportunity to work for several companies. As a graduate I will share my experience in the field computer science and software engineering, as well as general experience dealing with the professional work place. Knowing how to solve problems is a very important skill to have, but it is not the only skill you need in order to be successful.

  • How has my education helped me professionally?
  • What was expected of me as an engineer?
  • Pros and cons of working in an office vs. starting a business.
  • A few general rules to consider in the office.
I hope that by sharing my perspective on working as an engineer, students will have a better idea of what to expect when they graduate.
