The amount of coal combustion products (CCPs) put to beneficial use has been increasing steadily over the years and now comprises about 43% of all CCPs produced in the industry. The United States Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies formed a partnership with the industry to promote the reuse of coal ash and byproducts. The recycling and reuse of coal ash has several environmental benefits, including reduced land disposal or landfilling, reduced utilization of virgin resources, and reduced greenhouse gases.

Many state or federal regulators use the terms “beneficial use” when they reference recycling activities. Many power utilities that utilize coal or steam to generate electricity have pride in the projects they take to recycle as well. Over several years of research and experimentation, they have found various ways to employ the byproducts of the combustive process into productive and beneficial uses.

This talk will focus on a few of the most prominent beneficial uses.
