Alumnus’ Teams Win Technical Emmy Awards
Gary J. Sullivan, ‘83GS in electrical engineering, has lead teams honored with three Emmy awards for work on innovations in improving video technology.
Sullivan chairs or co-chairs several influential technical groups such as the Video Coding Experts Group, responsible for video coding standards, the Moving Picture Experts Group and the Joint Video Team (JVT), which create standards for video compression and transmission.
Sullivan chaired the JVT committee that developed the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video compression standard, and he edited large portions of it during development. He has chaired and contributed to many other video-related standardization projects.
His achievements were bestowed with a Primetime Emmy Engineering Award in August 2008 and a two Technical & Engineering Emmys in January 2009.
Sullivan works for Microsoft Corp., where his teams developed video coding standard and created the DirectX Video Acceleration video decoding feature of the Microsoft Windows operating system platform.
