Dean's List and Dean's Scholars
An undergraduate student who completes twelve or more (nine or more in summer terms) graded credits with all grades of "A", and no grades of "I", "X", or "U", is named a Dean’s Scholar.
An undergraduate student who completes twelve or more (nine or more in summer terms) graded credits with the grades of "A", "B", or "C" and a 3.5 grade-point average, with no grades of "I", "X", "U", "D", or "F", is named to the Dean’s List. Grades of "P" are not prohibited in Dean’s List qualifications, but cannot be used to meet the graded-credits minimum requirement.

J. B. Speed School of Engineering Honors and Awards
The following honors and awards were presented on April 14 at the Speed Art Museum. View photos from the ceremony.
- Lewis S. Streng Award - 2009 recipient: Rebecca M. McCardle
- A plaque and cash award is presented to the honor graduate of the J. B. Speed School of Engineering receiving the Master of Engineering degree.
- Robert C. Ernst Award - 2009 recipient: Karen E. Etter
- A plaque and cash award is presented each year to the engineering student who is the honor graduate of the J. B. Speed School of Engineering receiving the Bachelor of Science degree.
- Bennett M. Brigman Award - 2009 recipient: Boris D. Chernomordik
- A plaque and cash award is given each year to the Master of Engineering student who most nearly attains the objectives of the School.
- William S. Speed Award - 2009 recipient: Adam P. Pfendt
- A plaque and cash award is given to the graduating senior for having contributed the most services to the School.
- Alfred T. Chen Memorial Scholarship Award - 2009 recipients:Luke P. Stephens, David J. Underwood, Josh M. Corbett
- This award is for a Graduate/Professional student pursuing the Master of Engineering degree in any field. The recipient is selected on the basis of scholarship.
- J. B. Speed School of Engineering Alumni Award - 2009 recipient: Joseph R. Gordon
- A plaque and cash award is presented each year to the member of the graduating class who has achieved the greatest distinction in professional and extracurricular activities within the School and the University.
- Departmental Alumni Prizes - 2009 recipients: Kara Marie Zoeller (CHE), Mathew van der Meer (CEE), Richard M. Hoblitzell (CECS), Alexander J. Schultz (ECE), Meghan McKnight Hoskins (IE), Daniel A. Porter (ME)
- These cash prizes and certificates are awarded by the Speed School Alumni Association to outstanding Graduate/Professional Students nominated by each department.
- E.ON U. S. Presidential Scholarship - 2009 recipient: Kayla Ballinger
- The University of Louisville President has provided funds to award a scholarship to a Speed School student who graduated with the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree and who has also completed three cooperative internships at E.ON. U. S. The scholarship covers one year of in-state graduate tuition.
- Outstanding Student Award - Recipients: Michael McQuerry (Dec. 2008), Boris D. Chernomordik (May 2009)
- This award goes to the Speed School graduate who most exemplifies the attributes of the college, which include, but are not limited to character, leadership, service and scholarship. The recipient is honored in the University Commencement Book, and serves as banner bearer, leading the Speed School graduates into the University Wide Commencement Ceremony. There is one award for the May commencement and one for the December commencement.
- Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges - 2009 Recipient: Alex X. Frommeyer
- This award is given to students nominated by their department and recognizes outstanding academic achievement, curricular and extracurricular activities, and service to the school and community.
- Engineering Fundamentals Department, Tau Beta Pi Awards - Recipients: Outstanding Freshman Award, Abigail R. Wooldridge (2007-2008); Outstanding Sophomore Award, Daniel E. Dykes (2007-2008)
- The Engineering Fundamentals Department and the student chapter of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society, present freshman and sophomore awards annually. These awards are based on scholastic standing and courses completed at Speed School.
- John Mark Mann Memorial Scholarship - 2009 Recipient: Megan Mann
- A memorial scholarship fund has been established by the family and friends of John Mark Mann, an alumnus of the J. B. Speed School of Engineering. The income from this fund provides a scholarship to be awarded annually to a deserving female student, with first preference given to students enrolled in an undergraduate degree program. The scholarship is awarded to high achievers with consideration for financial need.
- Marlan T. Boultinghouse Scholarship - 2009 Recipients: Rahel Asfaw, Angelisia Bright, Jeremiah Chapman
- This scholarship fund was created with the intention of providing scholarships for full-time African-American students. Preference is given to students who are residents of Jefferson County, Kentucky. The award is restricted to freshmen or sophomores.
- Society of Women Engineers - Student Section Award - 2009 recipient: Nitzia Cheong Ng
- This award is presented to the student who has guided the student chapter the most this year and helped membership in the chapter expand.
- Wilburn-Shipman Scholarship - 2009 Recipient: Hannah Downs
- A fund has been established by Patricia Shipman Wilburn and John J. Wilburn to provide a scholarship for a student pursuing an undergraduate degree in the J. B. Speed School of Engineering. The scholarship is to be awarded to a native-born Kentuckian.
- Yogesh and Nila Kamdar Scholarship - 2009 Recipient: Bradley Schoch
- The Yogesh and Nila Kamdar Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic achievement and ability to a 2nd or 3rd year student pursuing an engineering degree.

Bioengineering Department
- Rolando “Chip” Cheng, Jr. Memorial Scholarship - 2009 Recipient: Lindsay Strotman
- This award is in honor of the late Rolando “Chip” Cheng, Jr, an alumnus and graduate student of the J.B. Speed School of Engineering (BS ECE 2000), whose zest for life, love of friends and family, and dreams of developing medical devices to help save patients' lives made the world a better place. The funds for this award have been provided by an endowed memorial scholarship in Chip’s name to recognize a bioengineering student in the graduating class whose character reflects humanitarianism, innovative mind, and entrepreneurial spirit. The student receives a scholarship, a plaque and their name engraved on a perpetual plaque.
- Mickey R. Wilhelm Achievement Award - 2009 Recipient: Matt Nitzken
- This award is in honor of Dr. Mickey R. Wilhelm, Dean of the J.B. Speed School of Engineering, for his commitment and dedication to the inception and development of the Department of Bioengineering in the J.B. Speed School of Engineering. The funds for this award have been provided by a gift from The Kroger Company to recognize a bioengineering student in the graduating class whose character, integrity, industry, leadership skills and persevering attitude identifies them with a high potential for success. The student receives a scholarship, a plaque and their name engraved on a perpetual plaque.
- Jerry and Pat Sturgeon Academic Excellence Award - 2009 Recipient: Daniel Bachman
- This award is in honor of Gerald “Jerry” E. Sturgeon, an alumnus of the J. B. Speed School of Engineering (Assoc. Engr. Techn. ‘77), and his wife Pat for their outstanding generosity to the Department of Bioengineering. The income from the endowment established in their names provides a scholarship which is awarded annually to the student achieving the highest scholastic performance after completing their Bachelor of Science degree in Bioengineering. The student receives a scholarship, a plaque and their name engraved on a perpetual plaque.
Chemical Engineering Department
- The Max A. Stoler Memorial Award - 2009 Recipient: Boris David Chernomordik
- With due consideration for an outstanding academic record, this award recognizes a chemical engineer in the graduating class whose leadership, industry, and integrity marks the student as one with the potential for future achievement.
- Earl Gerhard Scholarship - 2009 Recipient: Jessica Nichole Sadtler
- This scholarship will be awarded to a student in a master's degree program in Chemical Engineering on the basis of academic excellence and personal motivation.
- Donald F. Othmer Academic Excellence Award - 2009 Recipient: Luke P. Stephens
- An award given to a student who has the highest scholastic standing after completing the first three years of the Chemical Engineering program.
- D. A. Richards/G.E. Memorial Scholarship - 2009 Recipient: Ngor Biar Deng
- A tuition scholarship for a post baccalaureate student in Chemical Engineering is based on academic attainment and research aptitude.
- Robert Neiman Memorial Scholarships - 2009 Recipients: Juan Merizalde Carrillo, Luke P. Stephens, Kane Jonathan Miller, Jonathon M. Brown, Sarah C. Greenwell
- Memorial scholarships providing a scholarship to be awarded annually to a deserving student in the Master of Engineering program in Chemical Engineering on the basis of academic excellence and to an upcoming fourth year student in the Master of Engineering program in Chemical Engineering on the basis of academic excellence.
- Zeon Chemical Company Fellowship - 2009 Recipient: Harry Benjamin Russell
- Zeon Chemicals, Inc. established a full tuition award to be given to a graduating Mechanical or Chemical engineering student that will be pursuing their Master of Engineering degree at the Speed School of Engineering. The award is given on a rotating schedule to students in the Mechanical and Chemical engineering programs.
Civil and Environmental Engineering Department
- American Society of Civil Engineers’ Award - 2009 Recipient: Scott Hancock
- The Kentucky Section of the Society awards a prize consisting of the payment of the initiation fee and an associate membership badge to the honor Graduate/Professional student in Civil Engineering.
- Kentucky Section ASCE Scholarship - 2009 Recipients: Alex Frommeyer, Shawn Michael Kenney
- The Kentucky Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers presents this scholarship to a professional school student in Civil Engineering who demonstrates superior service to the student community.
- Hazelet & Erdal Scholarship - 2009 Recipient: Shawn Michael Kenney
- The Hazelet & Erdal consulting firm (now BRW) established a scholarship for a student majoring in Civil Engineering. It is awarded on the basis of academic merit and/or financial need.
- W. B. Wendt Engineering Award - 2009 Recipient: Aaron Cecil
- A current edition of an Engineering Handbook is awarded each year to the student in Civil Engineering who has the highest scholastic standing after having completed the first three years of the Civil Engineering program.
- Women in Construction Scholarship - 2009 Recipient: Alina Carrillo
- The Louisville chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction awards an annual scholarship to a third year Professional School student studying in a field related to the construction industry.
- Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Scholarship - 2009 Recipient: Nathaniel Weldy
- The Transportation Cabinet awards these scholarships consisting of tuition and stipends to qualified Kentucky residents who wish to study Civil and Environmental Engineering.
- David W. Wright – Public Works Scholarship - 2009 Recipient: James Brandon Kolze
- A scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing the Master of Engineering degree in the public works specialty area.
- Amar C. Singla – Facilities Scholarship - 2009 Recipient: Erin Cummings
- A scholarship awarded to a student pursuing the Master of Engineering degree in the facilities specialty area.
Computer Engineering and Computer Science Department
- John H. Simester Award - 2009 Recipient: Nathaniel A. Jones
- The award is given to the Computer Engineering and Computer Science program graduate who has attained the highest cumulative scholastic standing in the five year engineering program at the J. B. Speed School of Engineering.
- Raymond I. Fields Award - 2009 Recipients:Aleksey S. Fadeev, William Gregory Hensley
- The award is given to the Computer Engineering and Computer Science graduate who has contributed the most to the department and school in leadership and service.
- ACM Distinguished Student Award - 2009 Recipient: Nicholas A. Miles
- The award is given by the Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery to honor a student of the Computer Engineering and Computer Science Department who has made a significant contribution to the student chapter.
- CSE Doctoral Award - 2009 Recipients: Noha Youssry El-Zehiry, Brian S. Carter
- The award is given to a Computer Science and Engineering doctoral student selected by the CECS department. Priority is given to those pursuing academic/research careers.
- CECS Co-op of the year Award - 2009 Recipient: Mark D. Hamilton
- This award recognizes an outstanding CECS student who has successfully completed a co-op and nominated by his employer and/or a CECS faculty. Evaluation is based on student’s statement about the co-op experience and the student contribution to the employer.
- CECS Master of Science Award - 2009 Recipient: Darryl Felix DSouza
- The award is given to the Computer Science graduate who has attained the highest cumulative scholastic standing in the departmental Master of Science program.
- CECS Arthur M. Riehl Award - 2009 Recipients: Eugene Aubrey Rockey Jr., Christopher T. Boyle
- The award is given to a graduate/professional student with excellent academic performance and contributions to the department activities.
- CECS Outstanding Undergraduate Award - 2009 Recipients:Garret D. Ridge, Joseph A. Bedan
- The award is given to a CECS undergraduate student who demonstrates excellence and potential for future achievements. The recipient is selected by the CECS faculty.
- IEEE Outstanding CECS Student Award - 2009 Recipients:Wael Ali Emara, Nurcan Durak
- The IEE Louisville Chapter honors two outstanding students upon the recommendation of CECS faculty.
- Gwong Sun Scholarship - 2009 Recipient: Chris W. Lockhart
- The scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student in CECS with an outstanding academic record and potential for achievement in their professional career. The award is given in honor of Dr. Gwong Sun who joined the Speed School faculty in 1978 and served with dedication until his death in 2003.
Electrical and Computer Engineering Department
- Samuel T. Fife Outstanding Master of Engineering Graduate in Electrical Engineering Award - 2009 Recipients: Nicholas R. Blumenthal
- The Louisville Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers annually presents an award to the Electrical Engineering student in the J. B. Speed School of Engineering who has attained the highest cumulative scholastic standing by the end of the third year of study. The award consists of an Electrical Engineering handbook provided by the IEEE and a cash award provided by the Fife family.
- Samuel T. Fife Scholarship Award - 2009 Recipient: Steven L. Upchurch
- This scholarship award is given annually to the Electrical Engineering student in the J. B. Speed School of Engineering who has attained the highest cumulative scholastic standing by the end of the first year of study in the Professional School of Engineering.
- M. Gordon Northrop Student Activities Award - 2009 Recipient: Nicholas R. Blumenthal
- The Louisville Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers annually presents an award to the Electrical Engineering student in the J. B. Speed School of Engineering who has contributed most to the student branch activities. The award consists of an Electrical Engineering handbook.
- IEEE Outstanding Student Awards - 2009 Recipients:Ahmed A. Farag, M. Shawn Croley
- The University of Louisville Student Branch of IEEE honors two outstanding students.
- Electrical Engineering Outstanding Graduate Student Award - 2009 Recipient: Shireen Y. Elhabian
- This award is given to a student who has demonstrated outstanding research and scholarship in the Graduate Program in either Electrical Engineering or Computer Science and Engineering.
- James D. Barnhouse Memorial Scholarship - 2009 Recipients:Maisha M. Cox, James A. Willett
- The award is presented annually to support a deserving student majoring in Electrical Engineering at the J. B. Speed School of Engineering.
- Theobald Scholarship Award - 2009 Recipients:Maisha M. Cox, David R. Pangallo, James A. Willett
- This scholarship is awarded to a student who best demonstrates academic achievement, entrepreneurial spirit, civic involvement, and a commitment to engineering science.
Industrial Engineering Department
- Thomas L. Ward Scholarship Award - 2009 Recipient: Dustin Banet
- This award is given annually to the senior industrial engineering student in the J. B. Speed School of Engineering who demonstrates the highest level of academic achievement.
- Institute of Industrial Engineers Activity Award - 2009 Recipient: David Sowers
- This award is given annually to an industrial engineering student in the J. B. Speed School of Engineering who has contributed most to the activities of the University of Louisville Chapter 902 of the IIE.
- Louis D. Brandeis Scholarship Award - 2009 Recipient: David Burnett
- This award is given annually to the industrial engineering student in the J. B. Speed School of Engineering who has demonstrated both scholarly achievement and the promise of corresponding professional attainment.
- Society of Manufacturing Engineers Scholarship Award - 2009 Recipient: Rebecca M. McCardle
- The award is given annually to the student in the J. B. Speed School of Engineering who has demonstrated, through scholarly achievement and research, the potential to make a significant contribution to the field of Manufacturing Engineering.
- Frederick W. Taylor Management Award - 2009 Recipient: Mirielle Medina
- The award is given to an outstanding student in the Engineering Management Program.
- Industrial Engineering Graduate Student Award - 2009 Recipient: Sai Vikas Yalla
- This award is given to a student who has demonstrated outstanding research and scholarship in the Graduate Program in Industrial Engineering.
- Industrial Engineering Doctoral Dissertation Award - 2009 Recipients:
Daniel Sasso, Xiaoyi Wang - This award is given annually to the PhD student who is judged to have demonstrated outstanding achievement in the completion and defense of an Industrial Engineering doctoral dissertation.
- American Society For Quality Scholarship Award - 2009 Recipient: Aldo McLean
- An award given annually to an Electrical and Computer Engineering student who has demonstrated, through scholarly achievement and research, the potential to make a significant contribution to the field of Quality.
Mechanical Engineering Department
- American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Student Section Award - 2009 Recipient: Robert Dietrich
- An award given to the student who demonstrates outstanding leadership in the activities of the Student Section of ASME.
- Hsing Chuang Award for Excellence in Graduate Study - 2009 Recipient: Nicholas Chmielewski
- A plaque and a cash award are given annually to a Mechanical Engineering graduate student. Criteria include a strong scholastic record, demonstrated creativity in research or design, and participation in professional societies.
- Mechanical Engineering Department Academic Achievement Awards - 2009 Recipients: Matthew Howard (Sophomore), Oliver Beard (Junior), Karen Etter (Senior), Robert Catlett (Graduate Professional)
- These awards, consisting of a plaque and cash prize, are given to Mechanical Engineering students at the sophomore, junior, senior and graduate professional level with the highest cumulative academic standing in their class.
- ASME - Pi Tau Sigma Award - 2009 Recipient: William Norton Jr.
- The Mechanical Engineering Department annually awards a plaque and cash prize an outstanding student with membership in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Mechanical Engineering Honor Society, Pi Tau Sigma.
- Award for Excellence in Cooperative Education - 2009 Recipients: Casey Drane, Megan Jones
- Each year, a plaque is given to the Mechanical Engineering student with the most productive cooperative internship, as measured by employer comments and quality of the final report.
- ASHRAE Student Scholarship - 2009 Recipient: Thomas Craven
- The Louisville Section of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers offers a scholarship to a Mechanical Engineering student for best ASHRAE presentation.
- The George W. Springstube Scholarship - 2009 Recipient: Eric T. Robb
- This fund was established by Lisa Lindsey and Steven Lindsey to help provide financial support to a Kentucky resident attending the J. B. Speed School of Engineering majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
