Be “Up to Speed”: Continuing Education for Professional Engineers

The Speed Alumni Council in collaboration with the J.B. Speed School of Engineering and the UofL Alumni Association presents the third of a series of continuing education workshops that will enable Professional Engineers to obtain required professional development hours.

Ethics & Expert Witness in Engineering
April 20, 2012, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

2-Hour Professional Development Workshop with Joe Hagerty & Gerry Stovall
Continental Breakfast included

Dr. Hagerty, recently retired J.B. Speed Engineering School professor, taught at Speed since 1970. He graduated with a M. Eng. CE from Speed and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He is a Professional Engineer and has served as a consultant for a wide range of firms and has been an invited lecturer at a number of universities. Among the courses he taught at Speed was Ethics.

Gerry Stovall is with the law firm of Hall, Render, Killian, Heath & Lyman, where he represents public and private owners, design professionals, general and specialty contractors, suppliers, and sureties involved in construction projects across the country. In addition to being an attorney, Gerry is a licensed professional engineer with a Masters of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering from Speed, and has over 12 years of construction experience.

This course will offer an introduction on code requirements for continuing education and the legal aspects of ethical questions with an ethical analysis of possible situations. This evaluation of ethics will provide for a segue into professional services as an expert witness, evaluating the engineer’s conduct versus ethical provisions of the code. The course will cover the expectations of an expert witness, including who is an expert witness and why expert witnesses are used, as well as provide a case study to illustrate the expert witness experience.

Admission $40 (includes continental breakfast). Reserve space 1 week prior.

Space is limited, so register now for the Speed Continuing Education.
