Sociology Student Assoc
Sociology Student Association
In the fall of 2006, the Department of Sociology formed the Sociology Student Association (SSA) to promote interest in the study of sociology, sociological research, and other social and intellectual activities. The SSA is affiliated with the national honor society for sociology, Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), but unlike AKD, the SSA has no GPA or major requirements, nor does it require students to pay a fee to join. Rather, the SSA is open to any and all undergraduate and graduate sociology majors, minors, and those who are simply interested in sociology but are not in the program.
The SSA is overseen by Dr. Ryan Schroeder, assistant professor of sociology, who sees the organization as an "important support group, a key social networking tool, and an advocacy group for sociology students," as well as an "opportunity to participate in a wide range of other activities and functions." Last fall, the SSA toured a local prison, discussed volunteer opportunities, and attended a debate at the law school regarding school desegregation in Louisville.
The SSA provides a great opportunity for students to get involved, associate with faculty members in the department on a regular basis, and get to know other sociology students. If you are interested in SSA, please contact Dr. Ryan Schroeder at (502) 852-8010 or rdschr01@louisville.edu
