Top Ten Reasons to Attend the Saturday Academy

  1. To learn the history of Black people throughout the world: To acquire a working familiarity with African World history—an accurate and comprehensive account of the history of Africa and the African Diaspora (persons of African descent in the Caribbean, Brazil, Spanish America, the United States, Europe and Asia).
  2. To learn the cultures of Black people throughout the world:  To acquire a working familiarity with African World culture—music, dance, literature, philosophy, religion, art, life-ways of Africa and the African Diaspora (persons of African descent in the Caribbean, Brazil, Spanish America, the United States, Europe and Asia.
  3. To learn the history and culture of our own Black community:  To acquire a working familiarity with local and regional African American history and culture.
  4. To build a sense of racial, gender and sexual identity based on facts, not myths.
  5. To understand race, racism, racial inequality and patterns of racial historical relations—including relations with our allies, fair-weather friends and enemies.
  6. To understand the present objective conditions of African Americans—health, education, employment, income, wealth, crime and the justice system, political representation, et al.
  7. To develop a global Black perspective:  To understand the present objective conditions of persons of African ancestry throughout the world.
  8. To build a sense of community by learning together from a diverse group of presenters—from the academic world and the community.
  9. To explore and, if possible, formulate strategies to address racism and racial inequality—here and abroad.
  10. To have fun—together.
