About Us
The University of Louisville Polo club was founded in 2004. Former president Lauren Hexton, from Fort Worth, Texas, had a vision to see the University add a polo team to the Equestrian Program. While polo is actually a separate entity from the equestrian team, it was able to grow without the assistance of the equine department. A very determined girl, Lauren wanted to provide a more financially obtainable way for students interested in the sport. Collegiate athletes work harder for what they want to achieve because they are not only passionate about that activity but because they must also work around their school and work schedule.
It began as a strictly women’s team, but in the fall of 2005 the men’s team was added. Chad Bowman was the first member of the men’s team, already having 4 years of polo experience. While the program is still very new, there is already an increasing interest in the community due to feature articles in the Courier-Journal. Still trying to generate interest, we hope to make other appearances in the future through other forms of media.
Due to our large budget we are always looking for potential sponsors. If you are interested in donating products, services, or making a monetary donation, please contact us for more information. Benefits include advertising space for our sponsors.
Our Goal
The United States has an immense variety of collegiate polo teams. Some schools are able to offer tradition for their program. Yale boasts a program that is nearly a century old, while other teams, like Michigan State, have been established for less than a decade. Other schools like USC and UVA have older programs that have history that can appeal to students already interested in collegiate polo. Some schools, such as Cornell, offer polo as a varsity sport, while most keep it as a club sport. The level of support given by universities varies from school to school. UofL does not back us financially, though we are working towards having their support in the future.
Our goal is to become a recognized sport within the University of Louisville and earn their support. Our program is looking for sponsorship from individuals or groups to help financially support the program and act as a mentor as we build our tradition.
