What is the Graduate Student Association (GSA)?
The GSA is an organization made up of all nonprofessional graduate students.
Who belongs to the GSA?
If you are getting a graduate degree other than a MD, DMD, JD, or MEng you are already part of the GSA.
What do I have to do to join the GSA?
If you have been accepted into a graduate program at the University of Louisville, other than a program mentioned above,
you are already a member.
What is the Graduate Student Council (GSC)?
The GSC is the governing body of the GSA. Think of us like a department of the state government. Just as everyone living in
Kentucky is a resident of the state, not all residents work in Frankfort. To continue the metaphor, you can think of your
department as your city or county government, the Graduate School as the state government, and the University itself as the
federal government. The GSC helps set policies and creates programming to support graduate students.
How am I represented in the GSC?
Every department is allowed representation on the GSC. You can find out who the representative for your department is
by visiting the Representatives section of our website
http://www.louisville.edu/rso/gsc/representatives.html or by clicking on the Representatives link on the left hand
side menu. If your department does not currently have representation, you can become the representative for your
department.
What does the GSC do?
The main goals of the GSC are to provide official channels for the administration of graduate student affairs and the
budget allotted by the Student Government Association. The meetings of the GSC provide:
- A forum for communication between graduate student populations
- An opportunity for graduate students to participate
- Open communication with the Officers of the GSC who represent the GSA at SGA Student Senate meetings
- A means to educate graduate students of their rights, responsibilities and privileges
- A reservoir of interested students for appointment to University committees
- Graduate Student Research Days
- Graduate Student Dinner Dance
- Graduate Student Social Hour
- Co-Sponsoring events by other RSOs that are of interest to graduate students
- Offering for sale season tickets for UofL athletic events
How can I get involved in the GSC?
Most importantly, if your department is currently without representation, you can volunteer to server as a
representative for your department. If your department already has representation, you can come to meetings and make
your opinion known. There are also opportunities to serve on committees and to help plan events for graduate
students. The GSC is only as effective as the graduate students make it. Finally, be sure to join our listserv.
