KY Science and Engineering Fair

Judges for the 2012 state-wide Kentucky Science and Engineering Fair on March 31 are needed. For the tenth year, students from around the Commonwealth who have won competitions at the regional level will be bringing their research projects to the campus of Eastern Kentucky University on Saturday, March 31, to compete for prizes and scholarships at the state level. The organizers of the state fair are looking for professional scientists from government, industry, and academia to judge the projects and help select the winners. The most important part of this event is the opportunity for students to interact and discuss their research with professionals.

If you wish to participate this year, please go to the http://www.kysciencefair.eku.edu/ website. (NOTE THE NEW WEB ADDRESS) Follow the links to "Judges Registration" at the top, where you can register "on line". Your time commitment on March 31 would require your presence from 8 am until about 1 pm. Please select three categories you feel qualified to judge and every attempt will be made to honor your requests.

This year the effects of the national economic downturn are being experienced in a big way. There has been enough money raised to put on this year’s fair, but at this time, there is not enough funds to send the winners of the high school division to the INTEL International Fair in Pittsburgh in May. It is hoped that you, as judges from across the state, might know of some individual or a company that would be interested in supporting sending the top science students of Kentucky to the INTEL International Fair. Please contact Barbara Ramey if you know of someone the Board of Directors could approach for a TAX DEDUCTABLE donation of any amount. This is not a plea for your donations, but rather a request for your help in identifying potential donors (however, any donations will gladly be accepted). Currently state funding is not available.

If you are unable to participate this year, you can still help by forwarding this message to as many of your colleagues as you can and encouraging them to get involved. We are expecting an increase in the number of projects this year and we will need about 100 judges to do the job right. Any help you can give in RECRUITING NEW JUDGES will be greatly appreciated.

Once you have registered as a judge, you will receive a confirmation reply within a week. If you do not receive such a reply, please get in touch with Barbara.ramey@eku.edu, so that she can verify that your registration was received.

Please check your calendars and plan to help judge on Saturday, March 31, on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.
