Letter from Dr. Manuel Martinez-Maldonado
Research Strategic Plan
March 3, 2008
Dear Colleagues:
The completion of the research strategic plan was achieved by September 1, 2007. I would like to thank the entire University community, particularly all of you who participated in groups in our Saturday meetings, for their hard work, ideas and suggestions.
The plan was presented to the Board of Trustees in July 2007 and has been extensively discussed by Leadership and the executive cabinet of the President. Its principal aim is to achieve $100,000,000 in federal awards and contracts by 2014 despite the state’s budgetary difficulties.
Strategic recruitment that adheres to the strictest criteria of excellence and to our priorities must be a fundamental element in developing the workforce of scholars and investigators that will allow us to reach our teaching, education and research goals at U of L. Our commitment to: develop the Regional Bio-Safety Laboratory, submit the CTSA grant, seek National Cancer Institute designation for the James Graham Brown Cancer Center, and develop the appropriate bioinformatics infrastructure University-wide, are keys to U of L being competitive in an increasingly difficult funding and recruiting environment. Although we may have to postpone achieving some of the other goals in the strategic plan, we should not veer from our greater goal of furthering development of our institution into a premier metropolitan research university.
The key is the continued zest and intellectual achievements of our faculty in applying for grants and publishing their results in major impact periodicals. There may be detours on our trip, but we will get to our destination if we all collaborate and work together.
