Dear Research Community: The university has committed to significant improvements for our research computing infrastructure. Over the last year, a collaboration has been underway at UofL between the Information Technology Department and the informatics research community. The objective was to determine how IT could improve the university’s environment for research computing in terms of both infrastructure and service. IT engaged the informatics research community to identify their most pressing research computing needs. Researchers provided input as to what the capabilities of the infrastructure should be, as well as the evaluation of vendor proposals. In response, IT’s support staff has been augmented, and a new high performance computing cluster is being purchased, all tailored to provide support specifically for the cutting edge informatics research being performed at UofL. In an effort to sustain this momentum, we are asking all faculty and staff members who are engaged in information intensive research to provide us with details of the nature of the their work that would include a description of their needs in terms of: • computing power • data management • process management and workflow This information is important as we work to determine the next steps necessary to provide comprehensive support at the university in the areas of research computing and informatics. Thank you for your help, and we look forward to hearing from you.
