2006 Update on KY-BRIN/INBRE

Funding Increase

Kentucky jumps from $ 83.9 m to $ 162.3 m in NIH dollars in the
BRIN/INBRE/COBRE years

Overlayed on a map of Kentucky is a graph showing that, since 1992, NIH funding in Kenucky has increased nearly 375%, Kentucky state funding has increased nearly 350% and IDeA money has increased  nearly 150%.

KY-BRIN/INBRE Successes

  • Junior researcher, Dr. Robin Krimm at the University of Louisville, receives the state’s first Presidential Early Career Development Award for research on the role of role of neurotrophinsneurotrophins in the development of the gustatory system.
  • Junior faculty member, Dr. Eric Rouchka in Computer Sciences at the University of Louisville, receives NLM grant to support a regional bioinformatics summit.
  • Our most well-funded INBRE-researcher is statistician, Dr Arnold Stromberg at the University of Kentucky, who is now a Co--I on NIH grants worth $3.5m.
  • 13 junior faculty members of the KY--BRIN--INBRE supported institutions submit record numbers of R15/AREA grant applications in the INBRE years.
  • The BRIN--INBRE programs have aided 120 undergraduate students from KY-colleges to receive summer training in biomedical research at thcolleges to receive summer training in biomedical research at the research intensive institutions.
  •  Increase in undergraduates from regional colleges going on to graduate programs in the biomedical sciences (see following table).

Institutional Developments in Bioinformatics in Kentucky

  • 2005/06 - Established BS and MS Bioinformatics Training Programs at Eastern Kentucky.
  • 2006 -A new 2,000 sq. ft. Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics Core Facility is planned for Morehead State University. Enhancement of sponsored programs office with newly created position of Associate Provost for Research.
  • 2006 - A new Bioinformatics and Information Science Center (7 departments, 39 members) is established at Western Kentucky University.
  • 2006 -CSTA planning grants with informatics cores are submitted by the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky.
  • 2006 - A new College of Informatics is formed at Northern Kentucky University. New Informatics Dean, Dr. Douglas Perry, starts  starts in July 2006.
