Dr. Nigel Cooper, KY INBRE Program Director, receives 5-year 18.3 million NIH grant award

On August 1, 2014 the University of Louisville received $18.3 Million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support an Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Center of Biomedical Research Excellence. The IDeA program builds research capacities in states that historically have had low levels of NIH funding by supporting basic, clinical and translational research; faculty development; and infrastructure improvements. The Kentucky Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (KBRIN) hosted by the University of Louisville and led by Professor and Program Director Nigel Cooper, administrates a state-wide program which supports a variety of approaches to make a significant impact in the training of the current and future biomedical research workforce of our state. The principal network affiliated institutions include: University of Kentucky, Northern Kentucky University, Western Kentucky University, Eastern Kentucky University and Morehead State University. The statewide effort includes building a capacity for bioinformatics to serve the needs of genomics researchers across the state. This grant is currently in its 14th year of funding and has received over $50 Million in total funds from the National Institute of Health to support this mission.
