Bioinformatics AT Eastern Kentucky University
The Bioinformatics Option at Eastern Kentucky University, in the Departments of Computer Science and Biological Sciences, contains both undergraduate (B.S.) and graduate (M.S.) programs. The curriculum (see URLs below) consists of a core experience (coursework) in both Computer Science and Biology, followed by a research experience in collaboration with faculty at either the University of Louisville or the University of Kentucky. For their research experiences students are paired with faculty members with common interests to the students (e.g. database development and management, cybersecurity, programming for biological applications). The students then engage in a semester-long interaction with their faculty mentor on an effort with “real life” applications in the area of biomedical/life science research. The goal of the Option (at both levels) is to prepare students for a variety of opportunities (e.g. medical informatics, bioinformatics support, bioinformatics application development and implementation) for both further graduate training (Ph.D.) and employment opportunities in the arena of bioinformatics.
