Position Description
We are seeking a highly motivated bioinformatics postdoctoral scholar to join our interdisciplinary team of systems biologists. Bioinformatics research projects at the University of Louisville currently underway fall into the broad categories of high throughput sequence analysis; microarray and miRNA analysis; and algorithmic approaches to understanding transcriptional and translational control mechanisms. Additional interests lie in the areas of molecular interaction and signaling networks as well as integration of data across disparate data sources. The successful candidate will be expected to integrate into a larger workgroup of bioinformatics researchers and potentially collaborate across departments, schools, and universities affiliated with KBRIN. The University of Louisville is seeking to build upon an area of expertise by building a team of interdisciplinary researchers for a Systems Biology and Bioinformatics research core. This core will be supported by and have a presence in the statewide Kentucky Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (KBRIN). Review of candidates will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

The successful candidate should:

  • Have earned a Ph.D. degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related discipline.
  • Have programming skills and experience in the application of computational and statistical methods to genomic, proteomic, and other high throughput molecular biology data.
  • Have a superb track record of publishing scientific results.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate creative independence.
  • Be highly motivated to work in close collaboration with a variety of biomedical and computational researchers.

LAB TECH AND COORDINATOR

 

Western Kentucky University, Department of Biology, is seeking applications for a Lab Tech and Coordinator to operate the Biotechnology Center Core Facility.  This is a regular twelve-month full-time position.  The core facility is located in a new state-of-the-art building.  The main function of the center is to facilitate the diverse research activities of the center members and its students. All properly trained students are granted access to core facility equipment and supplies.

Responsibilities:

The following duties are customary for this position, but are not to be construed as all-inclusive.  Duties may be added, deleted and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs.

  • Manages Biotechnology Center Core Facility
  • Directs work-study students and trains them as valuable support personnel in core facility service
  • Teaches and mentors students in the safe application of biotechniques and the operation of Core Facility’s equipment
  • Effectively communicates with faculty, staff and other center members
  • Effectively communicates the mission and research being conducted by the Biotechnology Center members to visitors, school groups and dignitaries
  • Functions as the safety officer for the Biotechnology Center
  • Supports faculty-sponsored research
  • Supports faculty efforts to introduce new techniques into the classroom setting
  • Teaches Research Skills II: Biotechnology course
  • Maintains inventory, supplies and service contracts, and all Core Facility equipment

Required Qualifications:

  • M.S. Degree (B.S. Degree with equivalent experience, and broad experience in molecular/cellular techniques and instrumentation will be considered in lieu of M.S. Degree)
  • Must be well organized
  • Ability to manage laboratory services and operate equipment effectively
  • Must be interested in working with undergraduate and graduate researchers to enable the safe application of biotechniques in a research-oriented environment
  • Must possess a willingness to teach and learn through professional development opportunities
  • Knowledge of major equipment in the facility to include: DNA sequencer, real-time PCR machine, fluorescence imaging system, fluorescence deconvolution microscope, an Agilent bioanalyzer, and a HPLC

Salary Grade: 108

Expected Salary Range: $37,000.00 - $39,000.00 annually
