Hello, I’m Dr. Manuel Martínez-Maldonado.

As UofL’s new Executive Vice President for Research, I’m excited about our place in research in the nation … and also of what we want to achieve.

In 1997, the state told us that by the year 2020 UofL should be a nationally known center of research activity, but we are already there.

Just ten years later, we’re well on the way to greater recognition and meeting the goal of being one of the premier research metropolitan universities in this country.

  • Over the past ten years we've become the top school in the nation in terms of NIH funding growth.
  • We’re home to the first NIH-funded center for studying how pollution affects the heart.
  • We are pioneers in the use of adult stem cells to treat a variety of conditions, such as heart attacks.
  • We design detection systems for Army vehicles that protect our soldiers in the battlefield
  • Of course you all know about the world’s first FDA-approved cervical cancer vaccine.

But you should know that two of the researchers behind this amazing discovery are now members of the UofL growing scientific community.

These are just a few of many, many research victories we want you to know about. The areas range from medicine to nanotechnology to logistics and more.

Please take a few moments to browse this website and learn more about how UofL researchers are making an impact.  We also invite you to learn how we here in the Office of Research help them achieve their goals.

I trust that you will be impressed with what you see.  And in the very near future, I hope that when you think about research innovation, you think UofL.
