Craig McClain, M.D.

Dr. Craig McClain received his undergraduate education at Earlham College and his M.D. degree from the University of Tennessee.  He did his house officer training at the University of Pittsburgh, and his GI Fellowship at the University of Minnesota.  He then joined the faculty at the Minneapolis VAMC and the University of Minnesota where he rose to the position of Associate Professor.  In 1982 he moved to the University of Kentucky as Director of the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition in the Department of Internal Medicine.  He built the GI Section from a one person division to over 15 faculty members, and he subsequently served as Vice Chair for Research.  He also held faculty appointments in Nutrition and in Toxicology.  He wrote and was PI on the nutrition training grant dealing with nutrition and oxidative stress.  He served as Director of the NIH funded GCRC (General Clinical Research Center) from 1992 to 2000.  In 2000 he moved to the University of Louisville where he held the University Distinguished Chair in Hepatology and served as the Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Internal Medicine.  In 2005, Dr. McClain moved to The Ohio State University as Senior Assistant Vice President for Nutrition and Chief of GI.  He returned to University of Louisville in 2006 to help build the University of Louisville’s clinical and translational research program and direct the University of Louisville Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI).  He also holds a graduate faculty appointment in Pharmacology and Toxicology.  He has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.  He has served on both NIH and VA Study Sections and serves on the NIH Peer Review Advisory Group (PRAC).  He is past President of the American College of Nutrition.  He has served on several editorial boards, and has participated in many AGA and AASLD activities.  He has over 30 years of continuous federal funding for his research, and his research focus is in the area of cytokines and liver disease.  He currently is PI on 5 NIH grants including a R37 and P01 grant, and 1 VA grant.  His group was the first to describe dysregulated cytokine metabolism in alcoholic liver disease.  He also does research in nutrition, especially as it relates to liver disease.  Dr. McClain has mentored nearly 70 graduate students, postdocs, residents/fellows and junior faculty.
