Principal Investigator:
Patrick Shafto
My research focuses on development of computational models of human cognition. I am interested in how people solve problems of inductive inference -- prediction problems for which the outcome is uncertain -- so quickly, accurately, and flexibly. The working hypothesis is that these capabilities can be achieved through the combination of structured knowledge representations, situation-specific sampling assumptions, and Bayesian statistics. Problems I have focused on include predicting unobserved properties, learning categories and richly structured concepts, and learning in pedagogical settings.
