Academic Training
Below is the minimum coursework for students in the Experimental Psychology Ph.D. program, specified by each area. These lists are based on the Instructions to Graduate Students 2010-2011.
Cognitive and Developmental Sciences (CDS) Area
Two graduate courses in statistics:
PSYC 610, Advanced Statistics I
PSYC 611, Advanced Statistics II
Two core courses:
PSYC 621, Cognitive Psychology
PSYC 661, Advanced Developmental Psychology
Six additional graduate lecture or seminar courses (18 hours)
To be determined jointly by the student and his/her faculty mentor. The six electives are selected from lecture courses, seminars, or internships (2 semester limit) from within or outside of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences.
Research Hours:
A minimum of three credit hours per semester of research independent study (PSYC 605) with the student's graduate research mentor. Psychology 605 is to be taken every semester, including summer, until the Preliminary Examination is successfully completed.
Preliminary Examination
Dissertation
Upon passing the preliminary examination, students must maintain continuous enrollment at U of L by taking classes and/or dissertation research hours (PSYC 701) or by enrolling in a 0-credit hour course titled “Degree Candidacy” until completion of the degree.
Vision and Hearing Science (VHS) Area
Two graduate courses in statistics:
PSYC 610, Advanced Statistics I
PSYC 611, Advanced Statistics II
Core courses:
PSYC 613 Methods in Vision and Hearing Science
PSYC 633 Visual Processes
PSYC Sensory Neuroscience
PSYC Hearing Science I

Electives
Two seminars in VHS (609)
Two additional graduate-level courses (may be seminars)
Elective courses are to be determined jointly by the student and their respective faculty advisor. Multiple related undergraduate courses may satisfy one elective with permission of the mentor and Area Director.
Research Hours:
A minimum of 3 credit hours of PSYC 602 (Research in Vision and Hearing Science) is required to be taken each semester (including the summer [i.e., in one of the summer sessions]), until the Preliminary examination is passed.
