Recommend the role and function for the new structure

Center for International Learning, Research and Service
Director: Vision and leadership to expand the global presence of the UofL while increasing the numbers of international faculty and students coming to campus. Coordinate information about all international activities and serve as liaison to all units.

Assistant Director: To be responsible for students and faculty who study, conduct research, or visit other countries. This individual must understand programmatic issues and work closely with the units. Understanding the variety of study options like Fulbright Awards to specialized study tours, to places where our students will be welcomed are the kinds of issues important to this position. The individual must also work with the policies to provide financial assistance to those traveling abroad, consistent with the available resources.

Assistant Director: To be responsible for students and faculty who come from other countries to study or conduct research. Here the skill set must include immigration policies and practices, Homeland Security issues, transcript evaluation, orientation, housing, English language training options, and problem-solving. This individual must also have a close liaison with the units.

Additional staffing to:
1. Maintain records centrally for all programs.
2. Homeland security (SEVIS) regulations.
3. Foster national and international contacts to pursue extramural funding for activities abroad.
4. Specialist in travel and logistics to ensure regulations and policies related to travel are followed. Work with or serve as a travel agency.
5. Financial support to ensure budget is met and all regulatory and policyrequirements are fulfilled.
6. Serve a public relations role for activities and develop marketing for the UofLto international students as well as for study abroad opportunities for local students. Maintain web site.
7. Reception and administration.
8. Assist students in selecting appropriate course work in concert with the unit advisors.
Note: Each staff member should have additional language competence and becompetent to do at least two of the jobs described above to ensure that service isavailable at all times.
