Kansai Gaidai University
Applications are invited from University of Louisville students with an interest in Japanese culture for study at the Kansai Gaidai University of Foreign Studies in Osaka, Japan. Classes are conducted in English.
Applicants may come from any academic discipline. Scholarship recipients are expected to return to the University of Louisville to resume their studies. The scholarship recipient will study in Osaka for one academic year; i.e., from August through May.
The scholarship recipient is expected to arrive at Kansai Gaidai by no later than the last week of August. The Louisville exchange scholar is expected to enroll in the Asian Studies Program. The program is intended for students who wish to spend a year abroad learning about a non-western culture. Applicants must have completed thirty semester hours of college coursework with a grade point average of 3.0 or better at the time of the award.
The scholarship period is for ten months. The scholarship recipient will receive the equivalent of $5,000 to $6,000 per year to cover tuition plus room and board expenses. The recipient is expected to furnish spending money, transportation to and from Osaka, living expenses during the vacation period and between semesters, independent travel costs and other personal expenses (books, telephone charges, etc.), are estimated to be between $6,000 and $8,000.

A 750 word statement of purpose that outlines the proposed course of study, the applicant's qualifications, as well as educational objectives to be achieved by studying in Germany. In addressing his or her qualifications, the applicant should include a discussion of career goals, work experience, special skills or licenses, foreign language proficiency and foreign and domestic travel experience.
Applicants should demonstrate the ability to conduct themselves in both interpersonal and academic situations to the credit of the University of Louisville and the United States. Upon return to Louisville, the scholarship recipient must write a final report on the study year and provide up to twenty hours of service as a resource person for programs related to Kansai Gaidai and Japan.
