BlkOut
Dedicated to empowering LGBT students of color
When Dr. Martin Luther King said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," he was explaining the way different expressions of prejudice tend to intersect. Students who live at the intersection of race and sexuality often find themselves battling more than one "ism" and the struggle can be difficult, to say the least.
Blkout is a registered student organization dedicated to empowering lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people of color and providing a place of safety and support. While the primary focus is on support for those who need it, some members who are out of the closet also advocate for a campus environment that is free of homophobia and racism.
Meetings are a mix of informal gatherings and (for those who choose to participate) larger campus events that bring attention to the experience of LGBT people of color.
To participate, contact the Office for LGBT Services at lgbt@louisville.edu or call one of the group's advisors: Brian Buford (852-0696) or Dr. Kaila Story (852-8160).
