Transcript of Dr. Ramsey's June 2009 Speech at Orientation
Good morning and welcome to the University of Louisville. We’re delighted to have you here this morning for our summer orientation program. This is an important part of what we’re about, and your transition from your high school academic career to your college career. You’re in for an exciting, students: day and a half, parents: a day. I know first hand, because it’s hard for me to believe, but just four years ago I was sitting right where you are sitting going through orientation with my daughter, Jackie. The summer orientation is very important to us, it’s a step in this transition, and we are glad to have you here today.
More importantly, we are glad that you have chosen to come to the University of Louisville. Over the last year, or last couple of years, you and your families have had a lot of decisions to make. You’ve had to decide what you were going to do with your life after you graduated from high school. The fact that you’ve decided to attend college and continue your education is a great decision. It’s an important decision, and we’re glad you made that decision. We live in a changing world and in a changing economy, and the most important input into the production process today is brainpower. It’s human capital, it’s what we know, and because you’ve chosen to come to the University of Louisville, we make a promise to you, and it’s really more than a promise, it’s a commitment, it’s a covenant with you that we’re going to do everything that we can do to make sure you have the opportunity to be successful at the University of Louisville. So we make a commitment to you that we’re going to do everything that we can do to make sure that you have the opportunity to be successful. We cannot guarantee that you will be successful, because, when you come to the University of Louisville, you become part of our family, we become one, and you have to do your part.
So we’re excited that you’re here, I’m excited and already looking forward to Welcome Weekend in August, to seeing you back on campus. We will have our convocation; parents, my wife and I host that on the Friday evening of Welcome Weekend. We host a parents’ reception over in Grawemeyer Hall, it’s right after a picnic for all the the students. We look forward to seeing all of you then, and we look forward to a great start to the fall semester. Welcome to the University of Louisville, and go Cards!
